About Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang Beach: Krabi's Limestone Gateway

Ao Nang Beach sits on Thailand's Andaman coast, 22 km west of Krabi Town in Krabi Province. The beach faces a bay flanked by karst limestone cliffs that rise directly from the sea, giving the shoreline a distinct visual character unlike flatter Gulf of Thailand resorts. Long-tail boats depart here for Railay Beach, reachable only by water, and for the Phi Phi Islands, roughly 45 minutes by speedboat. The area gained significant tourist infrastructure after the 1990s, and today the Ao Nang beachfront road holds restaurants, dive shops, and transfer services within a compact walkable strip.

Where to Stay

Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses on Soi 5 and Soi 6 inland from the beach to mid-range resorts along the cliff-edge headland toward Noppharat Thara Beach, a quieter 3 km stretch to the north that forms part of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Higher-end properties occupy hillside positions with bay views.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Krabi International Airport is 35 km from Ao Nang; shared minivans take around 45 minutes.
  • Season: November to April brings dry weather; May to October sees rougher seas and reduced boat services to outer islands.
  • Snorkeling and diving: Operators along the beachfront offer day trips to Ko Poda and Chicken Island, both within 20 minutes by longtail.
  • Currency: Thai Baht (THB); ATMs are available on the main beachfront road.
