About Bangkok
The most convenient bases in Bangkok are Sukhumvit for international dining and the BTS Skytrain; Silom/Bangrak for business travelers and the riverside; Rattanakosin (Old City) for the Grand Palace and Wat Pho within walking distance; and Ari for a quieter, local-feeling stay north of the center. Most visitors stay four to six nights. Suvarnabhumi Airport is 30–45 minutes by rail via the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai station.
Where to Stay in Bangkok
Sukhumvit stretches along the BTS Asok–On Nut corridor and suits travelers who want nightlife, rooftop bars, and efficient transit. Silom anchors Bangkok's financial district and sits a short walk from Lumpini Park and the Chao Phraya express boats at Sathorn Pier. Rattanakosin, the 18th-century royal island, places guests within 500 m of Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho but has fewer mid-range hotels. Ari, north of the Victory Monument BTS stop, offers independent cafés and local markets at lower nightly rates.
Getting Around
The BTS Skytrain (opened 1999) and MRT Blue Line cover most tourist corridors and cost 16–59 THB per trip. River ferries on the Chao Phraya stop at 10+ piers between Nonthaburi and Wat Rajsingkorn. Metered taxis start at 35 THB; always insist on the meter. Tuk-tuks suit short hops but negotiate before boarding.
Practical Tips
- Dress code: Temples require covered shoulders and knees; carry a scarf.
- Heat: Temperatures average 34 °C April–May; the cooler season runs November–February.
- Currency: Thai Baht (THB); ATMs add a 220 THB foreign-card fee per withdrawal.
- Airport access: Don Mueang (DMK) serves low-cost carriers and is 30 km north of center.
