Nestled within a square moat and ancient brick walls, the Old City of Chiang Mai is the cultural and historical center of northern Thailand. Founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, this compact district packs centuries of temple architecture, traditional craftsmanship, and local street life into an area you can comfortably explore on foot or by bicycle.
The Old City is home to more than 30 Buddhist temples, making it one of the most temple-dense areas in all of Thailand. Wat Phra Singh, located near the western gate, is among the most visited — housing the revered Phra Singh Buddha image and featuring classic Lanna-style architecture with gilded carvings and tiered rooflines. Wat Chedi Luang, with its partially ruined 15th-century chedi, and Wat Phan Tao, known for its teak prayer hall, are equally worth visiting. The historic city walls and corner bastions, partially restored, give the district a distinct sense of place that sets it apart from the rest of Chiang Mai.
Within the moat, the grid of lanes offers a relaxed atmosphere with independent guesthouses, coffee shops, cooking schools, and traditional Thai massage studios. The Sunday Walking Street along Wualai Road and the Saturday market on the same stretch draw both locals and visitors looking for handmade goods, street food, and northern Thai specialties like khao soi and sai oua sausage. The district sits close to the Night Bazaar to the east and is well connected to Chiang Mai Railway Station and Chiang Mai Airport, both reachable within 20–30 minutes.
