Where to Stay in Chiang Mai

The Old City is enclosed by a square moat and contains over 30 wats, including Wat Chedi Luang (built 1391) and Wat Phra Singh. Hotels here range from budget guesthouses to boutique properties in restored teak houses, making it the most walkable base for first-time visitors. Nimman, 2 km west of the moat, anchors Chiang Mai's creative quarter: art galleries, third-wave coffee shops, and mid-range to 4-star hotels cluster around Maya Mall on Nimmanhaemin Road. The Riverside district, south along the Ping River, suits travelers seeking low-rise guesthouses and open-air restaurants away from tuk-tuk traffic. For access to elephant sanctuaries north of the city, hotels near the Chang Phueak (North Gate) bus terminal save travel time.

Getting Around

Chiang Mai has no metro or BTS line. Red songthaew shared trucks cover most routes for 30–40 THB per ride. Grab ride-hailing works reliably across the city. The Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road and the Sunday Walking Street on Wualai Road are both reachable on foot from the Old City. Doi Suthep temple sits 15 km northwest; a songthaew from the moat costs around 150 THB return.
