Ko Lanta: Long Beaches and Mangrove Channels

Ko Lanta Yai, the main island in Krabi Province, stretches 27 km along its western shore, delivering a quieter alternative to Phuket and Ko Samui. The island's backbone runs from Hat Khlong Dao in the north — wide sand favoured by families — down through Hat Long Beach (Phra Ae), Hat Khlong Khong, and the rocky headland at Laem Tanod on the southern tip, protected within Mu Ko Lanta National Park since 1990. The old town, Ban Ko Lanta, on the eastern shore retains a row of century-old Chinese-Malay shophouses on stilts above the water.

Where to Stay

Hotels and resorts concentrate along the west-coast beaches. Hat Khlong Dao suits first-time visitors and families; Hat Phra Ae draws a younger, social crowd around its beach bars; Hat Khlong Nin and Hat Khlong Hin offer smaller, quieter properties suited to longer stays. A handful of guesthouses sit in Ban Ko Lanta old town for those preferring local atmosphere over beachfront access.

Practical Tips

• Getting there: High-speed ferries run from Krabi Town pier (1.5 hrs) and from Ko Phi Phi (45 min); services operate November–April.
• Season: Dry season runs November to April; May–October brings southwest monsoon and many resorts close.
• Getting around: Motorbike rental (approx. 200–300 THB/day) is the standard way to travel the 27 km island road.
