About Istanbul

The most practical bases in Istanbul are Sultanahmet for walking distance to the Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace; Beyoğlu (Taksim–Galata corridor) for restaurants, galleries, and nightlife along İstiklal Avenue; Beşiktaş for a local residential feel beside the Bosphorus ferry terminals; and Kadıköy on the Asian side for independent cafés and a less-touristed rhythm. Most visitors stay four to six nights. Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is roughly 45–50 minutes from the centre; Istanbul Airport (IST) is 35–45 minutes via the Havataş shuttle or metro M11 line.

Where to Stay in Istanbul by Neighbourhood

Sultanahmet suits first-time visitors who want the Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, and Basilica Cistern on foot. Hotels here range from Ottoman-era converted mansions to compact guesthouses on quiet cobbled streets. Beyoğlu is the better choice for arts travellers and nightlife-seekers; the Pera district anchors several 19th-century heritage hotels a short walk from the Galata Tower. Beşiktaş and neighbouring Ortaköy sit directly on the Bosphorus and provide quick ferry access to both the European and Asian shores. Kadıköy, reached in 25 minutes by ferry from Eminönü, offers a quieter, younger-skewing stay with morning fish-market culture.

Getting Around

Istanbul's Istanbulkart contactless card covers trams (T1 Kabataş–Bağcılar line), metro, funiculars, and Bosphorus ferries. The historic Tünel funicular, opened in 1875, connects Karaköy to the lower end of İstiklal Avenue in 90 seconds. Taxis are widely available but insist on the meter.

Practical Tips

  • Dress code: Pack a headscarf and cover shoulders for mosque visits, including the Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye.
  • Currency: Turkish lira (TRY); card acceptance is high in Beyoğlu but carry cash for the bazaars.
  • Crowds: The Grand Bazaar is closed Sundays; Topkapı Palace closes Tuesdays.
  • Ferry timing: Cross-Bosphorus ferries run frequently between 06:00 and midnight from Eminönü and Kabataş piers.
