About Kusadası

Kusadası: Aegean Port Town Between Ephesus and the Sea

Kusadası sits on Turkey's Aegean coast, 90 km south of İzmir, and serves as the primary gateway to Ephesus — one of the largest surviving Roman cities in the world, just 18 km inland. The harbour handles major cruise traffic, and the town's Pigeon Island Castle (Güvercin Adası), a 16th-century fortress connected to the mainland by a causeway, anchors the seafront. The old bazaar quarter, known locally as Kaleici, runs uphill from the marina with narrow lanes of leather shops and spice stalls.

Where to Stay in Kusadası

Most hotels cluster along the Kadınlar Denizi (Ladies Beach) strip, roughly 2.5 km south of the harbour, or near the marina itself for cruise-day convenience. Larger resort properties line Long Beach (Uzun Beach) further south. Budget pensions sit inside Kaleici, within walking distance of ferry docks that connect to the Greek island of Samos in approximately 1.5 hours.

Practical Tips

  • Getting to Ephesus: Dolmuş minibuses run from the central otogar to Selçuk (nearest town to Ephesus ruins) for under ₺30; allow 25 minutes each way.
  • Cruise schedules: The harbour is busiest June–September; book town-centre restaurants in advance on port days.
  • Currency: Most vendors accept euros, but Turkish lira gives better exchange rates at local shops.
  • Climate: July and August average 33 °C; April and October offer cooler conditions and fewer crowds.
