About Bodrum City

Bodrum: Aegean Limestone, Marina Lights, and Ancient Halicarnassus

Bodrum sits on a peninsula jutting into the Aegean Sea in Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey. The city was ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of Herodotus in 484 BC and site of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Knights of St John built Bodrum Castle over the ruins in 1402; it now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, holding Bronze Age shipwrecks recovered from nearby waters.

Where to Stay in Bodrum

Bodrum Town clusters around the double bay flanked by the castle. Gümbet, 2 km west, concentrates budget and mid-range hotels near a sandy beach. Türkbükü, 18 km north on the peninsula's quieter Aegean side, draws higher-end visitors. The Yalıkavak Marina quarter, 20 km northwest, opened a Palmarina in 2012 and anchors superyacht traffic alongside boutique accommodation.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Milas–Bodrum Airport (BJV) sits 36 km northeast; transfer by bus or taxi takes 45–60 minutes.
  • Season: Peak season runs June–September; shoulder months (May, October) offer lower rates and manageable crowds.
  • Currency: Turkish lira; many hotels near the marina quote rates in euros.
  • Dress: Pack a layer for evenings — Aegean sea breezes drop temperatures noticeably after sunset.
