About Jinja
Jinja: Gateway to the Source of the Nile
Jinja sits on the northern shore of Lake Victoria in eastern Uganda, roughly 80 km east of Kampala along the Jinja–Kampala Highway. The city is best known as the site where the White Nile begins its 6,650 km journey northward — a point marked near Speke Monument, named for explorer John Hanning Speke who identified the source in 1858. The Owen Falls Dam (now Nalubaale Dam), completed in 1954, reshaped the river's edge but left the surrounding scenery largely intact.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels concentrate along Nile Crescent Road and the Main Street corridor, within walking distance of the riverfront. Adventure travelers fill guesthouses in the Jinja Central area, while quieter lodges occupy the Nile Bank Road strip. White-water rafting operators launch from Bujagali Falls, 8 km north of the city centre. Boda-boda motorcycle taxis are the standard local transport; taxis and minibuses connect Jinja to Kampala in about 90 minutes.
Practical Tips
- Best season: June–August and December–February offer the driest conditions for rafting and boat trips.
- Currency: Ugandan shilling; ATMs are available on Main Street.
- Rafting: Full-day Grade 5 rapids trips book up quickly on weekends — reserve at least two days ahead.
- Border crossing: Busia border to Kenya is 90 km east on the A109 highway.
