About Kampala

Kampala: Uganda's Seven-Hill Capital on Lake Victoria's Shore

Kampala spreads across seven hills above the northern shore of Lake Victoria, making it one of East Africa's most geographically distinctive capitals. Founded as a hunting ground for the Buganda Kingdom's kabaka in the 1880s, the city became a British protectorate administrative centre in 1905 and has grown to over 3.6 million residents. Nakasero Hill holds the central business district and most government ministries, while Kololo offers embassies and upmarket restaurants. The Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, stand on Kasubi Hill as the royal burial ground of Buganda kings.

Where to Stay in Kampala

Hotels concentrate along Nakasero Road and the Kololo ridge, placing guests within 3 km of Owino Market — Uganda's largest open-air market — and the Uganda Museum on Kitante Road, which has documented the country's cultural history since 1908. Ggaba Road leads south toward the lake shore, about 8 km from the city centre. Business travellers often choose properties near Kampala Road for proximity to the Bank of Uganda and Parliament building.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Boda-boda motorcycle taxis are fastest for short hops; negotiate fares before departure.
  • Currency: Ugandan shilling (UGX); ATMs on Kampala Road accept Visa and Mastercard.
  • Yellow fever: A valid yellow fever certificate is required at entry — carry the physical card.
  • Entebbe Airport lies 40 km south; allow 60–90 minutes by road during peak hours.
