About Odesa
Odesa: Black Sea Port City on Ukraine's Southern Coast
Odesa sits on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea, 475 km south of Kyiv. Founded in 1794 by Catherine the Great on the site of the Ottoman fortress Hacıbey, the city grew into the Russian Empire's principal southern port within decades. Its signature Potemkin Stairs — 192 steps descending from the Primorsky Boulevard to the harbour — date to 1841 and remain the city's defining landmark. The Opera and Ballet Theatre, opened in 1887 in neo-baroque style, ranks among the best-preserved 19th-century opera houses in Eastern Europe.
Where to Stay in Odesa
Most hotels cluster in the City Centre around Deribasivska Street and Primorsky Boulevard, within walking distance of the opera house and the stairs. The Arcadia beach district, 4 km south of the centre, offers resort-style accommodation along the seafront. A smaller selection of guesthouses operates in the Moldavanka neighbourhood, the historic working-class quarter that inspired Isaac Babel's Odessa Stories (1923–1924).
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Odesa International Airport is 8 km south-west of the centre; wartime conditions affect schedules — check current carrier availability before booking.
- Currency: Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH); card payments widely accepted in central hotels and restaurants.
- Language: Ukrainian is the official language; Russian was historically spoken widely but Ukrainian predominates publicly since 2022.
- Season: July and August bring peak beach tourism; May and September offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds.
