About Christchurch

Christchurch: Dorset Harbour Town at Two Rivers

Christchurch sits at the confluence of the Rivers Avon and Stour in Dorset, England, roughly 6 miles east of Bournemouth and 25 miles southwest of Southampton. The town takes its name from Christchurch Priory, an 11th-century Norman church that stretches 312 feet — the longest parish church in England. The Norman castle ruins in the town centre date to around 1100 and stand alongside the original Constable's House, one of the best-preserved Norman domestic buildings in the country.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster near the High Street and Quay area, placing guests within a short walk of the harbour and priory. The Saxon Square shopping district and Bargates retail street anchor the town centre. Families and walkers frequently base themselves here to access Hengistbury Head, a coastal headland 2 miles south that offers views across Christchurch Harbour and Mudeford Sandbank.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Direct trains from London Waterloo take approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to nearby Bournemouth; Christchurch station is one stop further east.
  • Best time to visit: May through September for harbour boat trips and beach access at Avon Beach.
  • Parking: Pay-and-display car parks operate on Civic Offices Road and near the quay; spaces fill quickly on summer weekends.
