About Inverness

Inverness: Gateway to the Scottish Highlands

Inverness sits at the northeastern end of the Great Glen, where the River Ness flows into the Moray Firth. Founded as a royal burgh in the 12th century, the city of roughly 47,000 is the administrative capital of Highland Council — the largest local authority area in the United Kingdom by land. Inverness Castle, rebuilt in red sandstone in 1836, overlooks the river and marks the city's historic core. The Victorian Market, dating from 1870, runs off Academy Street and sells local produce and crafts under a glazed roof.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster in three zones: the city centre along Church Street and Ness Walk, convenient for the river and castle; the Crown neighbourhood east of the river, quieter and residential; and the Inverness Retail and Business Park area near the A9, suited to drivers heading toward Cairngorms National Park, 40 km south. The B&B corridor on Old Edinburgh Road offers budget alternatives a 15-minute walk from the train station.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: ScotRail connects Inverness to Edinburgh in approximately 3 hours 20 minutes; the A9 links to Perth (160 km south).
  • Base for day trips: Loch Ness begins 3 km southwest at Dores; Culloden Battlefield lies 8 km east.
  • Weather: Expect rain year-round — pack waterproofs regardless of season.
  • Best timing: June and July bring the longest daylight; August hosts the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival near Beauly, 16 km west.
