About Stratford-upon-Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon: Shakespeare Country on the River Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon, in Warwickshire 40 km south of Birmingham, is the birthplace of William Shakespeare, born on Henley Street in 1564. The Shakespeare's Birthplace Trust manages five historic properties in and around the town, including Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery village, 1.6 km west of the centre. Over 3 million visitors arrive each year, drawn by the half-timbered streetscape and the Royal Shakespeare Company, which performs year-round at the RST and Swan Theatre on Waterside.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster along Bridge Street, Waterside, and Sheep Street, all within a five-minute walk of the RSC theatres and Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare is buried. The Shipston Road corridor south of the Avon offers independent B&Bs at lower rates. Converted manor properties operate within 5 km of the centre in the surrounding Warwickshire countryside.

Practical Tips

  • By rail: Chiltern Railways runs from London Marylebone in approximately 2 hours 20 minutes; Birmingham Moor Street takes around 1 hour.
  • RSC tickets: Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer season performances (April–October).
  • Parking: The Bridgeway multi-storey on Bridge Street is closest to the theatres and town centre.
