About Denali National Park
Denali National Park: Six Million Acres at the Roof of North America
Denali National Park covers 6.1 million acres in interior Alaska, centered on Denali (formerly Mount McKinley), the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet. A single unpaved road — the 92-mile Denali Park Road — penetrates the park, and private vehicles may drive only the first 15 miles to Savage River. Beyond that checkpoint, access is by park concessioner buses, which run from late May through mid-September. The park sees roughly 600,000 visitors per year, concentrated in a short summer window when temperatures range from 40°F to 70°F at lower elevations.
Where to Stay Near Denali
Most hotels and lodges cluster in the Denali Borough corridor along the Parks Highway (AK-3), particularly near Mile 238–248, about 1–2 miles north of the park entrance. Kantishna, deep inside the park at road's end, holds a handful of wilderness lodges accessible only by bus or small aircraft. Healy, 11 miles north on AK-3, offers budget-friendly motels with grocery access. Anchorage, 240 miles south, serves as the main gateway city for air arrivals.
Practical Tips
- Season: The park road opens in mid-May; peak wildlife visibility runs June–August.
- Buses: Reserve Denali Park Road bus tickets through Recreation.gov weeks in advance.
- Wildlife: Grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep, and wolves are regularly sighted from the road.
- Gear: Pack layered clothing; weather shifts rapidly above treeline regardless of the calendar month.
