About Fairbanks

Fairbanks: Alaska's Interior Gateway

Fairbanks, Alaska's second-largest city, sits at 64.8° north latitude — deep in the interior, 358 miles north of Anchorage via the Parks Highway. Founded in 1902 during a gold rush along the Chena River, the city grew around mining and later became a military hub. Today the Trans-Alaska Pipeline crosses just east of town, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks anchors a year-round research community focused on Arctic science.

Visitors arrive for two contrasting reasons: the aurora borealis (visible roughly August through April on clear nights) and the Midnight Sun, which keeps the sky light for nearly 24 hours around the June solstice. The Chena Hot Springs Road corridor, 60 miles east, draws travelers seeking geothermal soaks even in temperatures that regularly drop to −40 °F in January. The Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center downtown provides free exhibits on Athabascan culture and regional natural history.

Practical Tips

  • When to visit: June–July for Midnight Sun festivals; August–March for aurora viewing.
  • Getting around: Rent a car — public transit is limited and many attractions are outside town.
  • Cold-weather prep: Pack rated gear for sub-zero temps if visiting October through March.
  • Airport: Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) receives direct flights from Anchorage, Seattle, and Denver.
