About Geneva-on-the-Lake
Geneva-on-the-Lake: Ohio's Oldest Resort Strip on Lake Erie
Geneva-on-the-Lake, situated on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Ashtabula County, Ohio, holds the distinction of being Ohio's oldest summer resort community, drawing visitors since the 1870s. The village stretches along Lake Road (Ohio Route 531), a half-mile commercial strip lined with arcades, ice cream stands, and lakefront bars that has operated continuously for over 150 years. Geneva State Park, immediately west of the village, adds 698 acres of forested terrain and a full-service marina with 383 boat slips.
Where to Stay
Accommodations range from waterfront motels along the Strip to cottage rentals and the Geneva-on-the-Lake Lodge, the state park lodge operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Most visitors arrive between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the Strip operates at full capacity. Wine enthusiasts also frequent the area as a base for the Lake Erie Wine Country corridor, which counts more than 30 wineries within a 30-mile stretch of Ashtabula and Lake counties.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: The village sits roughly 50 miles northeast of Cleveland via I-90 and State Route 534.
- Season: Most Strip businesses operate May through September only; confirm hours before an off-season visit.
- Wine touring: The Grand River Valley AVA begins just south of the village; several wineries offer tasting rooms without advance reservations on weekends.
