About Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls: Where the Maidenhair Meets the Gorge
Niagara Falls, New York sits on the western edge of Erie County, directly across the Niagara River from its Canadian counterpart. The falls themselves — Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls — collectively discharge roughly 3,160 tonnes of water per second at peak flow. Niagara Falls State Park, established in 1885, is the oldest state park in the US and places visitors within metres of the crestline on Prospect Point. The Maid of the Mist boat tour has operated since 1846, departing from the base of Observation Tower on the American side.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along Rainbow Boulevard and Third Street, keeping guests within a 10-minute walk of the falls. The Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) sits 5 km east of downtown; Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is 35 km southeast and handles far more routes. Amtrak connects Niagara Falls station to New York Penn Station in roughly 9 hours on the Empire Service.
Practical Tips
- Crowds: Weekend evenings in July–August draw the largest crowds; arrive before 9 a.m. for shorter queues at Maid of the Mist.
- Border crossing: The Rainbow Bridge pedestrian crossing to Ontario requires a valid passport.
- Seasons: The falls do not freeze solid, but ice bridges form below in January–February and some attractions close.
- Pack layers for boat tours — mist lowers the perceived temperature year-round.
