Lahaina: Maui's Historic Harbor Town

Lahaina sits on Maui's west coast, 25 miles northwest of Kahului Airport, facing the island of Lānaʻi across the Auʻau Channel. The town served as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1820 to 1845 and later became the Pacific's largest whaling port. Front Street, running parallel to the harbor, concentrated that commercial energy for over a century. In August 2023, a catastrophic wildfire destroyed much of the historic district, including the 150-year-old Banyan Tree courtyard area and hundreds of structures. Recovery and selective reopening have been ongoing since late 2023.

Where to Stay

Accommodations cluster in the Kāʻanapali resort corridor, 3 miles north of central Lahaina, where beachfront hotels line a 3-mile stretch of white sand. Lahaina town itself holds smaller inns and vacation rentals for visitors drawn to the harbor, the Pioneer Inn (built 1901), and whale-watching boats departing December through April.

• Access: Rent a car at Kahului Airport; the Honoapi'ilani Highway connects Lahaina to the rest of Maui.
• Whale season: Humpback whales concentrate in the channel November through May.
• Wildfire sensitivity: Check current access restrictions before visiting specific historic blocks.
