About Moab

Moab: Red Rock Gateway to Arches and Canyonlands

Moab, Utah sits on the Colorado River at 1,240 metres elevation, flanked by sandstone walls that glow orange at dusk. The city serves as the primary access point for two national parks: Arches National Park, 8 km north on US-191, and Canyonlands National Park, 56 km southwest via Highway 313. Both parks draw roughly 1.5 million combined visitors annually, making Moab one of the most visited small cities in the American Southwest.

Where to Stay in Moab

Most hotels concentrate along Main Street (US-191) through the centre of town, within a 10-minute drive of Arches' entrance. The Mill Creek corridor east of downtown attracts smaller inns and canyon-view properties. A secondary cluster sits near the Colorado River along Highway 128 (River Road), offering quieter surroundings 5–15 km from the centre. Rates rise sharply from March through October; shoulder months of November and February offer lower nightly prices and thinner crowds at trailheads.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The nearest commercial airport is Canyonlands Field (CNY), 27 km north; Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) in Colorado, 110 km east, offers more frequent service.
  • Transport: A personal vehicle is essential — no public transit connects Moab to either national park.
  • Weather: Summer daytime highs regularly exceed 38 °C; pack sun protection and carry at least 4 litres of water per person for canyon hikes.
  • Entry fees: A 7-day vehicle pass to Arches costs $35 (2024); the America the Beautiful Annual Pass at $80 covers both parks.
