About Page

Page: Gateway to Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell

Page, Arizona sits on a mesa 4,300 feet above sea level along the Utah border, founded in 1957 as a construction camp for Glen Canyon Dam. Today the city of roughly 7,500 residents anchors one of the American Southwest's most-visited corridors. Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon — both within 5 miles of downtown — draw over one million visitors annually into their slot-canyon chambers of wave-carved Navajo sandstone. Horseshoe Bend, a 270-degree meander of the Colorado River, lies 4 miles south via US-89 and requires only a 1.5-mile round-trip walk from the trailhead parking area.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster along Lake Powell Boulevard, the main commercial strip, placing guests within 10 minutes of both canyon tour operators and the Carl Hayden Visitor Center at Glen Canyon Dam. Wahweap Marina on the western shore of Lake Powell is 5 miles from central Page and serves as the launch point for houseboat rentals and guided tours into the 186-mile reservoir.

Practical Tips

  • Canyon tours: Antelope Canyon is on Navajo Nation land — guided tours are mandatory; book at least two weeks ahead in peak season (March–October).
  • Crowds: Horseshoe Bend parking fills by 8 a.m. in summer; arrive before sunrise or after 5 p.m.
  • Getting around: No public transit serves Page; a rental car or guided shuttle is necessary.
  • Weather: Summer highs regularly exceed 100 °F (38 °C); carry a minimum of two liters of water per person.
