About Zion National Park
Zion: Utah's Sandstone Canyon Country
Zion National Park, established in 1919, occupies southwestern Utah roughly 160 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The park's centrepiece is Zion Canyon, a 15-mile gorge carved by the Virgin River through Navajo sandstone walls rising 2,000 feet. Angels Landing — a 5,790-foot summit reached via chains bolted into near-vertical rock — draws permit-holding hikers year-round. The Narrows, a slot-canyon wade through the Virgin River itself, is equally sought after.
Where to Stay
Springdale, the gateway town at the south entrance, holds the majority of hotels and inns. A free shuttle connects Springdale lodging to the park visitor centre. Kanab, 40 miles east, provides additional budget options with access to both Zion and Bryce Canyon National Park.
Practical Tips
- Season: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are cooler; summer canyon temperatures regularly exceed 100°F.
- Permits: Angels Landing requires a lottery permit via recreation.gov.
- Driving: Private vehicles are banned on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive from March through November — use the free park shuttle.
