The Grand Canyon stretches 277 miles along the Colorado River in northwestern Arizona, reaching depths of 6,093 feet and widths of up to 18 miles. Where to Stay Near the Rim

Most hotels concentrate in Grand Canyon Village (South Rim) and the town of Tusayan, 1 mile south of the park's south entrance on US-64. The North Rim, open mid-May to mid-October, offers the Grand Canyon Lodge as the only in-park accommodation on that side. Flagstaff, 80 miles south via US-89, provides the widest off-park hotel selection and Amtrak access.

• Elevation: South Rim averages 7,000 feet — pack layers even in July when rim temperatures can drop 20°F below the canyon floor.
• Permits: Overnight camping below the rim requires a backcountry permit; apply four months ahead.
• Shuttle: Free South Rim shuttle buses run year-round on the Village and Kaibab routes, reducing parking pressure.
• Water: Inner canyon temperatures exceed 110°F in summer — carry 1 liter per hour when hiking below the rim.
