About Sanibel

Sanibel: Barrier Island Shaped by Gulf Currents

Sanibel is a barrier island city in Lee County, Florida, connected to the mainland by the 3-mile Sanibel Causeway since 1963. The island runs roughly east–west, orienting its beaches northward to catch shells carried in by Gulf tidal flows — a geographic quirk that places Sanibel among the top shelling destinations in the Western Hemisphere. The bent-over posture of shell seekers at low tide has its own name: the Sanibel Stoop. The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge covers 6,400 acres across the island's north side and shelters more than 245 bird species, drawing birders and kayakers especially from December through April.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels and resorts cluster along Periwinkle Way, the island's main commercial corridor, and along West Gulf Drive toward Blind Pass. A local zoning ordinance caps building height at 45 feet, so all accommodations are low-rise — cottages, small inns, and mid-size resorts rather than towers. Hurricane Ian struck in September 2022 and caused widespread damage; most hotels and businesses had reopened by late 2023 following extensive reconstruction.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The Sanibel Causeway toll is $6 each way from the Fort Myers side.
  • Best shelling: Low tide near Bowman's Beach or Blind Pass yields the highest concentrations.
  • Season traffic: December through April brings peak crowds — allow extra time on the Causeway and Periwinkle Way.
  • No high-rises: Every property on the island sits under the 45-foot height cap.
