About Stowe
Stowe: Vermont's Mountain Village at the Base of Mansfield
Stowe, Vermont sits at the foot of Mount Mansfield — the state's highest peak at 4,393 feet — roughly 36 miles east of Burlington. The village was settled in the early 1800s and grew into a year-round resort destination after ski lifts opened on Mansfield in 1937. Today the Stowe Mountain Resort draws skiers and snowboarders from October through April, while summer visitors hike the Long Trail, cycle the paved Stowe Recreation Path, and tour the von Trapp Family Lodge, opened by the family of The Sound of Music fame in 1950.
Where to Stay in Stowe
Accommodations concentrate along Mountain Road (Route 108), which runs 7 miles from the village green to the ski base. Properties range from slope-side slopeside lodge rooms to historic inns on the green itself. The Stowe Village Historic District offers walkable access to Church Street restaurants and the 1863 Community Church steeple. Foliage season — peak typically the second and third weeks of October — commands the highest rates of the year.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Burlington International Airport is 36 miles west; no direct Amtrak service reaches Stowe.
- Season timing: Book ski weekends at least 8 weeks ahead; foliage weekends sell out faster.
- Pack layers: Summit temperatures run 10–15°F colder than the village year-round.
- Local transit: The free Mountain Road Shuttle runs daily during ski season between the village and resort base.
