About Benguela
Benguela: Angola's Atlantic Railroad City
Benguela sits on Angola's central coast, roughly 480 km south of Luanda along the Atlantic shoreline. Founded by the Portuguese in 1617, the city served for centuries as a major slave-trade port before transforming into a commercial hub anchored by the Benguela Railway — a 1,344 km line connecting the coast to the Democratic Republic of Congo border. That railway, largely restored after Angola's civil war ended in 2002, remains the city's defining infrastructure.
Visitors arrive for the wide sandy beaches along Restinga and Caotinha, the colonial-era architecture around Praça do Município, and the relatively calm pace compared to Luanda. Angolan domestic travelers, regional business visitors, and a growing number of international tourists use Benguela as a base for the wider Benguela Province, which includes the fishing town of Lobito just 30 km north.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Benguela Airport (BUG) receives domestic flights from Luanda in under 1 hour; the drive from Luanda takes approximately 5–6 hours on the EN100 coastal road.
- Currency: Angolan kwanza (AOA); carry cash as card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels.
- Climate: Benguela's Benguela Current keeps coastal temperatures mild year-round, averaging 22–26 °C, with a dry season running May through October.
