About Luanda
Luanda: Atlantic Capital of Angola
Luanda, founded by Portuguese navigator Paulo Dias de Novais in 1576, sits on a natural bay along Angola's north-central Atlantic coast. The city is home to roughly 9 million people, making it one of Africa's largest urban centres. The Marginal (Avenida 4 de Fevereiro) seafront promenade runs the length of the bay, anchoring the Ilha de Luanda — a narrow sandbar peninsula where seafood restaurants face the open ocean. Inland, the Fortaleza de São Miguel, built in 1576, overlooks the lower city (Baixa) and the busy Porto de Luanda.
Where to Stay in Luanda
Most hotels concentrate in Miramar and Ingombota, the central business districts directly above the Baixa. The Talatona corridor, roughly 20 km south along the expressway, hosts newer international-brand properties near the Shopping Belas complex. Business travellers form the majority of Luanda's hotel guests, drawn by Angola's oil and gas sector headquartered here.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Angolan kwanza (AOA); USD is widely accepted in hotels but carry local currency for markets.
- Airport: Aeroporto Internacional 4 de Fevereiro (LAD) is 4 km from the city centre.
- Visa: Most nationalities require a visa obtained in advance or on arrival; confirm with the Angolan consulate before travel.
- Traffic: Allow 60–90 minutes for central routes during peak hours — road congestion is severe.
