About La Rioja
La Rioja: Gateway to Talampaya and the Famatina Range
La Rioja city sits at 515 m above sea level in northwestern Argentina, roughly 1,150 km from Buenos Aires. Founded in 1591 by Juan Ramírez de Velasco, it is the capital of La Rioja Province and home to around 180,000 residents. The city anchors visits to Parque Nacional Talampaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 150 km to the south, where red sandstone canyons rise 150 m and Triassic-era dinosaur fossils have been recovered. The Sierra de Famatina, visible to the west, peaks above 6,000 m and draws trekkers and high-altitude enthusiasts.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate along Avenida Ortiz de Ocampo and near the Plaza 25 de Mayo, the colonial heart of the city. The surrounding streets hold the Convento de Santo Domingo, reputedly the oldest surviving church in Argentina, dating to 1623. Travelers use La Rioja as a base for wine routes through Chilecito and the Valles Calchaquíes further north.
Practical Tips
- Climate: Summers (Dec–Feb) reach 38 °C; spring and autumn offer cooler conditions for canyon visits.
- Getting there: Capitán Vicente Almandos Almonacid Airport (IRJ) receives daily flights from Buenos Aires in roughly 2 hours.
- Currency: Argentine peso; carry cash as smaller estancias and park entrances may not accept cards.
- Talampaya access: Guided tours are mandatory inside the national park; book ahead during July school holidays.
