About Mendoza

Mendoza: Argentina's Wine Capital at the Foot of the Andes

Mendoza sits 1,040 metres above sea level in western Argentina, roughly 1,050 km from Buenos Aires by road. The city anchors the Cuyo region and serves as the gateway to the highest peak in the Americas — Aconcagua, at 6,961 m. The surrounding province produces roughly 70% of Argentina's wine output, with Malbec the dominant red variety across the Luján de Cuyo and Maipú sub-regions. Rows of irrigation channels lined with sycamore trees run through the grid-plan city centre, a design inherited from the post-earthquake rebuild of 1861.

Where to Stay in Mendoza

Most hotels cluster around Aristides Villanueva Avenue in the Quinta Sección, the city's main bar and restaurant strip, and around General San Martín Park, a 307-hectare green space three blocks from the commercial core. The Chacras de Coria suburb, 15 km south, draws visitors who want boutique wine-country stays within cycling distance of bodegas.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Buses connect the city centre to Maipú and Luján de Cuyo; taxis to Chacras de Coria run roughly 20 minutes from Plaza Independencia.
  • Best season: March–April for harvest festivals; July–August for Aconcagua trekking season.
  • Currency: Transactions in Argentine pesos; many bodegas also accept USD cash at the official rate.
