About Dilijan
Dilijan: Forest Resort Town of the Tavush Highlands
Dilijan sits in the Tavush Province of northern Armenia, 100 km north of Yerevan along the M4 highway. The town occupies a narrow valley at roughly 1,500 m elevation, surrounded by oak and beech forest that covers the Dilijan National Park — 28,000 hectares established in 2002. That forest canopy is the defining feature: summers are noticeably cooler here than in the Ararat Valley, making Dilijan a retreat for Yerevan residents from June through September.
Where to Stay and What Draws Visitors
Most hotels and guesthouses cluster along Sharambeyan Street, a restored 19th-century craft quarter with stone workshops and a small ethnographic museum. Day-trippers arrive for Haghartsin Monastery (12th–13th century), 18 km northeast of the town center in a forested ravine, and for Goshavank Monastery (founded 1188), 20 km east near the village of Gosh. Walkers use Dilijan as a base for the Transcaucasian Trail section that cuts through the national park. The Parz Lake day hike, 7 km from town, is a practical half-day circuit.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Marshrutkas run from Yerevan's Kilikia bus station daily; journey time approximately 2 hours.
- Best season: May–October; roads to trailheads can be icy November–March.
- Currency: Armenian dram; card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels.
