About Goris

Goris: Gateway to Syunik's Cave Valleys

Goris sits in the Vararak gorge of Syunik Province, southeastern Armenia, roughly 330 km from Yerevan. The city of around 20,000 people serves as the main base for exploring the region's distinctive basalt rock pillars, medieval monasteries, and abandoned cave settlements. The old quarter preserves 19th-century Russian-era stone houses laid out on a grid — unusual among Armenian towns of its size.

Tatev and the Cave Villages

The primary draw for visitors is Tatev Monastery (9th century), reachable via the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway — at 5.7 km, the longest non-stop double track cable car in the world when it opened in 2010. The short ride drops into the Vorotan gorge, 320 metres below the plateau. Nearby, Khndzoresk is a semi-abandoned cave village carved into a cliff face, still partially inhabited until the 1950s; a suspension footbridge now links the two sides of the ravine.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Marshrutkas run from Yerevan's Kilikia bus station; the journey takes 5–6 hours.
  • Base for day trips: Goris hotels are the logical overnight stop for Tatev, Khndzoresk, and the road south to the Iranian border crossing at Meghri.
  • Season: May–October offers the most reliable road conditions; winter snow can close mountain passes.
