About Heidelberg
Heidelberg: Melbourne's Impressionist Heartland
Heidelberg is a suburb in Melbourne's northeast, 12 km from the CBD in the City of Banyule, Victoria. The area gave its name to the Heidelberg School, Australia's first significant Impressionist movement, active from the 1880s under artists Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, and Charles Conder, who painted along the Yarra River corridor at Eaglemont. That creative legacy is anchored today at Heide Museum of Modern Art on Templestowe Road — a gallery and sculpture park on 16 acres where the original Reed family farmhouse still stands among art-filled gardens.
Getting Around and Where to Stay
Accommodation options sit close to Burgundy Street, the suburb's main strip of cafes, restaurants, and independent shops. Heidelberg Railway Station serves the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines, connecting to Flinders Street Station in roughly 30 minutes. The suburb also borders Austin Health and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre on Lower Plenty Road, drawing visitors with medical needs to the area. Bolin Bolin Billabong, a permanent wetland reserve along the Yarra, attracts walkers and birdwatchers year-round.
Practical Tips
