About Lucknow

Lucknow: Gold-Rush Village in the Central Tablelands

Lucknow is a historic gold-mining village in New South Wales, sitting roughly 6 km east of Orange on the Mid Western Highway. Gold was discovered here in 1851, making it one of the earliest rushes in the colony. The surrounding landscape of rolling tablelands sits at around 870 m elevation, giving the area cool summers and cold winters compared to coastal NSW.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels and guesthouses in Lucknow are limited; most visitors base themselves in Orange and day-trip to the village. The Central Western Railway connects Orange to Sydney in roughly 4.5 hours. Driving from Sydney via the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains takes approximately 3.5 hours. Rental cars from Orange Airport, which receives flights from Sydney, give the most flexibility for exploring the historic sites and nearby Canobolas State Conservation Area.
