About Falls Creek

Falls Creek: Victorian Alps Ski Village at 1,780 m

Falls Creek sits at 1,780 metres above sea level in the Bogong High Plains of north-eastern Victoria, roughly 375 km from Melbourne. Australia's second-largest alpine resort, it receives an average annual snowfall of around 2 metres between June and September. The village is car-free once snow season begins — vehicles park at the base and guests walk or take snowcats to accommodation. Ski trails cover 450 hectares across 92 runs, served by 14 lifts, with terrain graded from beginner slopes near Sun Valley to advanced chutes off Ruined Castle.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters around the Village Bowl and Slalom Street, keeping most lodges ski-in/ski-out. Properties range from bunk-bed lodges to self-contained chalets. Summer visitors — hikers tackling the Falls Creek to Mount Hotham Alpine Crossing and cyclists on the Around the Mountain Cycle Tour — find rates significantly lower outside the June–September snow window.

Practical Tips

  • Access: The resort road from Mount Beauty is 32 km; chains are compulsory in winter and available for hire at the base.
  • Season: Snow season runs mid-June to mid-September; book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for school holidays.
  • Snow report: Check Resort Management daily snow depth reports before travel.
  • Summer: Trails open for hiking from late December through March.
