About Lankaran

Lankaran: Caspian Coast Gateway to Talysh Country

Lankaran sits on Azerbaijan's southeastern shore, roughly 260 km south of Baku along the Caspian Sea coast, close to the Iranian border. The city anchors the Talysh cultural region, where subtropical humidity supports tea plantations and rice paddies that stretch inland toward the Talysh Mountains. The Hirkan National Park, a UNESCO-listed reserve 35 km northwest, shelters ironwood forests dating back to the Tertiary period — a feature found almost nowhere else in the Caucasus.

Where to Stay in Lankaran

Hotels concentrate near the Lankaran seafront and the central bazaar district, where the 19th-century Russian fortress tower still stands. Visitors come for birdwatching along the Caspian flyway, hiking in Hirkan, and sampling Talysh cuisine — notably levengi (walnut-stuffed fish) and local black tea. The city draws Azerbaijani domestic tourists heavily in summer; spring and autumn offer milder temperatures for outdoor activity.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Lankaran Airport (LLK) operates domestic flights from Baku in under 1 hour; the highway covers the same route in roughly 3 hours.
  • Climate: Subtropical, with over 1,200 mm of annual rainfall — pack waterproof layers even in summer.
  • Currency: Azerbaijani manat (AZN); card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels.
