About Quba
Quba: Apple Country and Mountain Gateway in Northern Azerbaijan
Quba sits in northern Azerbaijan, roughly 170 km north of Baku along the eastern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. The city is the administrative centre of Quba District and stands at around 600 m elevation, giving it noticeably cooler summers than the capital. It is best known across the South Caucasus for its apple orchards, which cover the surrounding valleys and supply markets throughout the region. The Qudiyalçay River runs through the area, and the landscape shifts quickly from fruit-garden terraces to forested ridges.
Where to Stay and Who Visits
Most visitors arrive between June and October — hikers targeting trails toward Shahdag National Park, families escaping Baku's heat, and travellers crossing into the high-mountain villages of Xinaliq (also spelled Khinalug), one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the Caucasus, located about 60 km west of Quba. The Jewish quarter of Krasnaya Sloboda, directly across the river, is among the few remaining Mountain Jewish communities in the world and draws cultural and heritage travellers. Hotels in Quba range from small family guesthouses to mid-range properties with Caucasus-facing views.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses run regularly from Baku's Bayil bus station; the journey takes roughly 3 hours.
- Best season: May–September for hiking; late September for the apple harvest.
- Currency: Azerbaijani manat (AZN); card acceptance is limited outside central hotels.
