About Chittagong
Chittagong: Bangladesh's Port City on the Bay of Bengal
Chittagong — known locally as Chattogram since the official rename in 2018 — is Bangladesh's second-largest city and handles roughly 92% of the country's import-export trade through Chittagong Port, one of the busiest seaports in South Asia. The city sits where the Karnaphuli River meets the Bay of Bengal, 264 km southeast of Dhaka. Rolling green hills separate it from the flat delta plains to the north, giving Chittagong a distinct landscape uncommon in Bangladesh.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around GEC Circle, Agrabad (the commercial district), and Nasirabad, all within 5 km of the port. The Patenga beachfront, 14 km from city centre, attracts budget guesthouses and a handful of mid-range properties. Business travelers typically base themselves in Agrabad for proximity to the port authority offices and EPZ (Export Processing Zone).
Practical Tips
- Getting around: CNG auto-rickshaws and app-based rides (Pathao, Shohoz) cover most routes; metered taxis are scarce.
- Best season: November to February brings dry weather and temperatures around 20–25 °C.
- Day trips: The Sitakunda Eco-Park and Foy's Lake lie within 35 km north of the city center.
- Currency: Bangladeshi Taka (BDT); ATMs are widely available in Agrabad and GEC Circle.
