Mostar: Ottoman Stone and the Neretva Gorge

Mostar sits in the Neretva River valley in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, roughly 130 km south of Sarajevo. The city is defined by Stari Most (Old Bridge), a 16th-century Ottoman arch rebuilt in 2004 after its destruction in 1993. The bridge connects the two banks of the Neretva and gives Mostar its name — mostar means bridge-keeper. The surrounding Stari Grad (Old Town) quarter preserves cobbled lanes, copper workshops, and Ottoman-era mosques including the Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque (1618).

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster within walking distance of Stari Most in the Stari Grad district or along Bulevar to the west. Properties here put guests within 5–10 minutes on foot of the old bazaar (Kujundžiluk), the bridge divers' platform, and riverside restaurants. A smaller set of mid-range hotels lines the road toward Mostar Airport, 5 km southwest of the centre.

• Getting there: Buses connect Mostar to Sarajevo (roughly 2.5 hours) and Dubrovnik (about 3 hours); the scenic train from Sarajevo takes around 2 hours 40 minutes.
• Best time to visit: May–June and September see mild temperatures and smaller crowds than July–August peak season.
• Currency: Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM); fixed at 1 EUR = 1.95583 BAM.
• Bridge diving: Certified divers jump from Stari Most in summer — spectators watch from the banks free of charge.
