About Sarajevo
Sarajevo: Four Faiths on the Miljacka River
Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, sits in a narrow valley carved by the Miljacka River, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps at roughly 500 metres elevation. The city of 275,000 is where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Orthodox, Catholic, and Jewish heritage share the same street grid — the Baščaršija bazaar, dating to 1462, stands fewer than 800 metres from the 1896 Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot on the Latin Bridge, making Sarajevo a turning point in modern history. The 1984 Winter Olympics left behind Trebević Mountain cable-car infrastructure and ski runs now used year-round.
Where to Stay in Sarajevo
Most hotels concentrate in two zones. The Old Town (Stari Grad) district puts guests within walking distance of Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque (1531) and the copper-smiths of Kazandžiluk Street. The Ferhadija–Titova corridor in the Austro-Hungarian grid offers larger business-class properties and direct tram access via Line 1, which runs east–west across the city centre.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Tram Line 1 covers the main corridor; a single ride costs under 2 BAM (≈1 EUR).
- Currency: Bosnia uses the Convertible Mark (BAM), pegged 1.956 BAM to 1 EUR — ATMs are common in Stari Grad.
- Weather: Summers average 26 °C; winters bring reliable snowfall above 900 m on surrounding peaks.
- Airport: Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) sits 6 km southwest of the city centre.
