About Cáceres
Cáceres: Paraguay River Gateway in Western Mato Grosso
Cáceres sits on the western bank of the Rio Paraguai in Mato Grosso state, roughly 220 km west of Cuiabá. Founded in 1778 as Vila Maria do Paraguai, the city retains a colonial street grid around Praça Barão do Rio Branco, flanked by 19th-century facades. The surrounding Pantanal wetlands — the largest tropical wetland on Earth — draw researchers, anglers, and wildlife photographers year-round. The annual Festival Internacional de Pesca, held each October, attracts competitors from across South America and brings tens of thousands of visitors to the riverfront.
Where to Stay and Getting Around
Most hotels concentrate near the central praça and along Avenida São Luís, within walking distance of the river port. Budget pousadas dominate the market; a handful of mid-range properties cater to ecotourism groups heading into the Pantanal. The Marechal Rondon Airport (CCX) receives regional flights from Cuiabá, and MT-010 highway connects the city to the BR-070 corridor.
Practical Tips
- Best season: April–September (dry season) for Pantanal access and fishing tournaments
- River crossings: Ferry services to the opposite bank operate daily from the central port
- Wildlife: Jabiru storks, giant otters, and capybaras are commonly sighted within 20 km of the city
- Currency: Card acceptance is limited outside the centre — carry reais in cash
