About Brasilia

Brasília: Modernist Capital on the Central Plateau

Brasília was purpose-built between 1956 and 1960 under President Juscelino Kubitschek, rising from the Cerrado savanna roughly 1,000 km from both Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Designed by urban planner Lúcio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer, the city's Plano Piloto district follows a plan shaped like an aircraft or bird, with government ministries aligned along the Eixo Monumental and residential superquadras fanning out from the central axis. The Cathedral Metropolitana, Palácio da Alvorada, and Congresso Nacional twin towers are all within walking distance of the central esplanade.

Where to Stay

Most hotels concentrate in the Setor Hoteleiro Norte and Setor Hoteleiro Sul, two dedicated hotel sectors built into the original urban plan — a feature unique among world capitals. The Lago Sul and Lago Norte lakeside neighborhoods offer quieter alternatives a short drive from the esplanade. The city hosts a steady flow of government delegates, international diplomats, and architecture tourists, particularly since UNESCO added Brasília to its World Heritage List in 1987.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The Metrô DF operates two lines, but coverage outside the Plano Piloto is limited — budget for taxis or ride-hailing apps.
  • Climate: The dry season runs May through September; pack lip balm and extra hydration for the low humidity of the Cerrado plateau.
  • Airport: Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International (BSB) sits about 12 km south of the Plano Piloto.
