About Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara: Dune Village on Brazil's Ceará Coast

Jericoacoara sits inside a federal environmental protection area on the coast of Ceará, roughly 300 km west of Fortaleza. The town has no paved streets — sand paths connect the main square, the beachfront, and the base of the Duna do Pôr do Sol (Sunset Dune), where travelers gather each evening to watch the sun drop into the Atlantic. The lagoons of Lagoa Azul and Lagoa do Paraíso lie within day-trip distance and are popular with kiteboarders and windsurfers, drawn by consistent northeast trade winds that blow from July through January.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters in three zones: the sandy village center, the quieter Rua das Dunas fringe, and a handful of posadas on the approach road near Jijoca de Jericoacoara. Properties range from basic hammock guesthouses to mid-range posadas with pools. Most close or reduce services in the low-season months of April and May.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Transfer by 4WD from Jijoca (18 km) — standard vehicles cannot enter the reserve.
  • Best wind season: July–January for kiteboarding; calmer seas in February–April.
  • Cash: ATMs in the village are limited; carry reais from Fortaleza.
  • Connectivity: Mobile signal is weak; Wi-Fi is available at most posadas.
