About Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda: Granite Boulders and North Sound Anchorages
Virgin Gorda is the third-largest island in the British Virgin Islands, covering roughly 21 km². The island divides naturally into two zones: the southern tip, where cathedral-sized granite boulders at The Baths National Park form sea-level grottos and tidal pools, and the northern half, centered on North Sound — a sheltered deep-water anchorage ringed by reefs and smaller cays. The Baths date to volcanic activity approximately 70 million years ago and remain the most-visited single site in the BVI.
Where to Stay
Accommodations cluster around Spanish Town (also called The Valley), the island's main settlement, and along the North Sound shoreline near Gun Creek. Resorts on North Sound are accessible only by ferry from Gun Creek or Bitter End. Properties range from hillside villas above Savannah Bay to full-service resorts on private cays. The island holds roughly 30–40 bookable properties at any time.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Fly into Beef Island/Tortola (EIS) then take a 30-minute ferry to St Thomas's Bay, or use the North Sound Express from Tortola's Trellis Bay.
- Currency: US dollar is the official currency; no exchange needed for US travelers.
- High season: December through April; book accommodations several months ahead.
- The Baths access: Arrive before 09:00 or after 15:00 to avoid peak tour-boat crowds.
