About Tortola Island
Tortola Island: Road Town Harbour and the Mount Sage Rainforest
Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands, covering 54 sq km in the northeastern Caribbean. Road Town, the territorial capital, lines the southern shore around a deep-water harbour that links by ferry to St. Thomas (roughly 20 nautical miles west) and Virgin Gorda (12 nautical miles east). The island's central ridge rises to Mount Sage at 521 m — the highest point in the BVI — where a national park protects one of the last stands of Caribbean rainforest.
Where to Stay
Properties cluster in three zones: Road Town for ferry access and commerce, Cane Garden Bay on the northwest coast for beach stays, and the East End near Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island. Cane Garden Bay shelters a crescent of pale sand backed by the Callwood Rum Distillery, which has operated since the 17th century. Road Town hotels suit sailors transiting the charter hub and travelers crossing to neighbouring islands on the regular catamaran services.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Flights route via San Juan, St. Thomas, or Antigua; the ferry from Charlotte Amalie takes roughly 45 minutes.
- Currency: The US dollar is the official currency throughout the BVI.
- Entry: A valid passport is required; most nationalities need no advance visa.
- Hurricane season: Runs June through November; December to April brings the driest and calmest conditions.
