About Kazanlŭk

Kazanlŭk: Rose Valley Gateway and Thracian Heritage

Kazanlŭk sits at the heart of the Rose Valley (Rozova Dolina) in central Bulgaria, roughly 180 km east of Sofia at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. The city produces a significant share of the world's rose oil — distilled from Rosa damascena harvested each May and June. That harvest drives the annual Rose Festival, held the first weekend of June, when the streets around Sedefcho Square fill with processions and open-air distillation demonstrations.

Thracian Tomb and Where to Stay

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, dating to the 4th–3rd century BC and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, draws history-focused visitors year-round. The original frescoes are protected; a full-scale replica stands 200 m away in Tyulbeto Park and is open daily. Hotels in Kazanlŭk cluster along ul. Rozova Dolina and near the central market, placing guests within a short walk of both the park and the Iskra Historical Museum.

Practical Tips

  • Getting here: Direct buses run from Sofia's Central Bus Station; journey time is approximately 2.5 hours.
  • Best season: Visit late May to early June to coincide with the rose harvest and avoid summer heat.
  • Currency: Bulgarian lev (BGN); cards accepted at most hotels but carry cash for smaller rose-oil vendors.
  • Day trips: Shipka Pass and the Shipka Memorial Church (1902) lie 12 km north by road.
