About Pleven

Pleven: Fortress City on the Danube Plain

Pleven sits on the northern Bulgarian plain, roughly 170 km north of Sofia and 50 km south of the Danube. The city is defined by the Siege of Pleven (1877), a five-month Russian-Romanian-Bulgarian campaign against Ottoman forces that proved decisive in the Liberation War. The Panorama Pleven Epopee 1877 — a circular oil painting 115 m in circumference completed in 1977 — recreates the siege in full detail and remains one of Bulgaria's most visited historical monuments. The Skobelev Park surrounding it holds original trenches, artillery, and mausoleums.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster near pl. Vazrazhdane (Liberation Square) and along ul. Vasil Levski, placing guests within a 10-minute walk of the Panorama and the central pedestrian zone. The Kaylaka Nature Park, 4 km south of the centre, draws visitors to its canyon reservoir and archaeological ruins; properties on the southern edge of town give easier access. Pleven anchors a base for day trips to the Ethnographic Museum in Lovech (60 km east) and the Pleven Winery region, one of Bulgaria's oldest vine-growing areas.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Direct trains from Sofia Central Station take approximately 2.5 hours; buses run hourly and take around 2 hours.
  • Currency: Bulgarian Lev (BGN); ATMs available throughout the centre.
  • Best time to visit: May–September for outdoor access to Kaylaka Park; early September coincides with local Liberation commemorations.
