About Koh Rong

Koh Rong: Cambodia's Largest Island and Gulf Coast Retreat

Koh Rong sits in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 25 km west of Sihanoukville, and covers approximately 78 sq km — making it the second-largest island in Cambodia. The island gained its first regular ferry service in 2009, and development has remained deliberately slow, preserving long stretches of forested interior and more than 40 km of coastline. Koh Touch village on the northwest shore is the main hub, with guesthouses, beach bars, and the ferry pier concentrated along one compact strip. The bioluminescent plankton visible in the water on dark nights near Long Set Beach draws particular interest from independent travelers.

Where to Stay

Accommodation ranges from bamboo bungalows directly on the sand at Koh Touch to mid-range resorts near Long Set Beach and Palm Beach on the quieter eastern coast. Backpackers concentrate around the northwest pier area; travelers seeking fewer crowds head south toward Lonely Beach, a 45-minute walk through jungle trails. Most properties operate on solar or generator power, and air-conditioning is not universal.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Fast ferries from Sihanoukville take 45–60 minutes; book in advance during Khmer New Year (April).
  • Connectivity: Mobile data coverage is limited; download offline maps before arrival.
  • Currency: Carry small US dollar bills — card terminals are rare outside the larger resorts.
  • Season: Dry season runs November through April; heavy swells can disrupt ferries May–October.
