About Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville: Cambodia's Gulf Coast Gateway
Sihanoukville sits on the Gulf of Thailand in southwestern Cambodia, roughly 230 km from Phnom Penh by road. The city — officially called Krong Preah Sihanouk — was founded in 1960 as Cambodia's only deep-water port. For decades it served beach-seekers with laid-back shores like Otres Beach and Ochheuteal Beach, both within 3–5 km of the city centre.
The city underwent rapid, large-scale construction from 2016 onward, driven by Chinese investment in casino-resort complexes. That wave receded after 2019, leaving a shifting accommodation landscape that ranges from budget guesthouses in the Serendipity neighborhood to newer mid-range hotels near the waterfront. Visitors today use Sihanoukville primarily as a transit hub for ferries to Koh Rong (about 45 minutes) and Koh Rong Sanloem (about 35 minutes).
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses from Phnom Penh take 4–5 hours; a domestic airport (KOS) offers limited flights.
- Ferry access: Ferries to Koh Rong islands depart from the Sihanoukville Ferry Terminal daily, with multiple operators.
- Currency: US dollars are accepted widely; carry small bills for tuk-tuks and markets.
- Best timing: November to May offers dry-season weather with calmer seas for island crossings.
