About Lake Louise

Lake Louise: Glacier-Fed Waters in Banff National Park

Lake Louise is a small resort hamlet in Banff National Park, Alberta, roughly 57 km west of the town of Banff along the Trans-Canada Highway. The lake itself sits at 1,731 m elevation, fed by Victoria Glacier, and its turquoise colour results from rock flour suspended in glacial meltwater. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, open since 1890, anchors the lakeshore and remains the primary landmark. In winter, the frozen lake hosts the Ice Magic Festival, typically held in January, and the Lake Louise Ski Resort operates on the slopes of Whitehorn Mountain.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Lake Louise clusters in two areas: the lakeshore itself and the Lake Louise Village near the highway interchange, roughly 4 km apart. Options range from the historic Fairmont to mid-range lodges and a HI-Canada hostel in the village. The Icefields Parkway begins here, connecting Lake Louise north to Jasper over 232 km — one of the most-photographed mountain drives in Canada.

Practical Tips

  • Getting here: No train service stops at Lake Louise; the nearest VIA Rail station is Banff, with shuttle connections available.
  • Season: Roads are open year-round; the lakeshore trail is accessible May through October.
  • Park pass: A Parks Canada day pass or annual Discovery Pass is required to enter Banff National Park.
