About Jasper

Jasper: Gateway to Canada's Largest Rocky Mountain Park

Jasper, Alberta sits at 1,060 m elevation within Jasper National Park — at 11,000 km², the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. The town itself occupies a compact grid between the Athabasca River and Connaught Drive, with the Whistlers and Pyramid Mountain rising directly above the streets. Visitors arrive for the Icefields Parkway, a 232 km highway connecting Jasper to Banff and widely regarded as one of Canada's most scenic drives. The Columbia Icefield, roughly 100 km south, draws travelers to walk on the Athabasca Glacier.

Where to Stay in Jasper

Accommodation clusters along Patricia Street and Connaught Drive in the townsite, plus a handful of lodges outside town near Maligne Lake and Pyramid Lake. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, 4 km east of the townsite on Lac Beauvert, anchors the upper end of the market. Smaller motels and B&Bs line the residential blocks within walking distance of restaurants and the Via Rail station.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Via Rail's Canadian train stops at Jasper three times weekly from Vancouver (18 hrs) and Toronto (3 days).
  • Park pass: A Parks Canada day pass is required for most activities; annual Discovery Passes cover all national parks.
  • Wildlife: Elk roam the townsite year-round; maintain a 30 m distance and never feed animals.
  • Season: July–August is peak season; book accommodation 3–4 months ahead for summer travel.
